I am an accountant who dreams of being a best-selling author/talk show host/lottery winner/documentary film producer/lobbyist. I have five wonderful (well sometimes) children and am married to the sexiest, bald, fireman on the planet. I have been through hell and back and spent so much time there that I still smell of smoke. Please follow my blog ... I get a little giddy when I see the number of followers go up !

Do you think that drug companies should advertise directly to consumers?

I love this one:
WHEN YOUR HUSBAND MAKES A BAD DECISION, EXPLAIN TO HIM HOW GOD IS
USING IT TO BENEFIT YOUR SPIRITUAL LIFE.
So I shouldn't have called him a "dumbass" and refused to sleep with him for a week .... oops .... my bad.
That might be the secret to happiness in her marriage, but it isn't in mine.
I think that the whole "submission" thing leads a lot of women to stay in abusive relationships, because they honestly believe that it's what God wants. So sad.
I am so going to print off the "educational pamphlet" and show it to Big D .... just so he can say "Woman ... go get me a beer" and then I can kick him in the nuts!
Some people just don't have a clue.
I stopped allowing my daughters to listen to Rhianna after she sang songs about being "roughed up" in a good way. Now THAT was totally sending the wrong message to her young listeners.
A friend of mine heard an interview on the radio with a drug rep who got some "new boobs" so she could increase her sales .... and it worked! Her stats went through the roof! She knew that she was basically prostituting herself for better numbers, but she didn't care.
What made me really mad is that those doctors were prescribing pills based on what the drug rep looked like, NOT on what was best for the patient.
I subscribe to:

Good Housekeeping

Family Circle
Vanity Fair
Marie Claire
Glamour
Allure

Oprah
When my subscription to Allure expires, I won't be renewing it ... it's all make-up and fashion, stuff I don't care too much about.
That list seems really long, but I read for at least an hour every day and I donate them all to the local women's shelter after I read them.
The mother on "The Middle" ... Big D and I laugh at that show every week, because we live it in real life.
ROLLER DERBY TOMORROW !!! WOO HOO !!!
How 'bout you let me keep those tax dollars you're taking for everything that you call "safety nets", and I'll decide which societal safety nets I want to support.
OK, but what if you don't like me? What if you don't want to support schools because you don't have kids. What if you don't support elder homes because your parents are already dead. What if you don't support mental health centers because you don't know anyone who is mentally ill.
We are a better society when we care for the unwanted.
Here's a really good breakdown of what Obama's been up to while being president. I think it's a good read for anyone interested in getting a grip on what the man has done.
"Two years into his service, I couldn't name a solid thing that he did."
Just a few big ones: Health Care Reform, catching Osama Bin Laden, Dodd-Frank (DF) Wall Street Reform, the banking and automotive industry bailouts...
The guy's been busy.
"He hasn't worked with the parties to find compromises"
I'd suggest some reading on that matter. It hasn't been Obama's fault. The Republicans in Congress decided the minute he got elected that their strategy for dealing with Obama would be to stonewall everything that came from the Oval office. They have spent the last three years sitting on their hands in opposition of everything Obama. It's been ridiculous and childish.
Obama's done a pretty good job of getting some work done considering half of the people he is supposed to work with have no desire to work with him.
I think they should rig him with flashlights and rope make him go find the remaining 20 passengers he abandoned. He can't come back ashore till he has found them. Fitting punishment.
What @DrD said. I think it's indicative of the general attitude many people have these days. Why change my bad habits when there are MEDICATIONS! that can help me. This little pill will make it all better without any real effort on my part.
Things like this is WHAT gives the military a bad rep. It's fucking horrible. I don't give a shit how they were trained or how they view the enemy. If their parents raised them(and I'm not saying they didn't)they would have at least some respect for the dead.
I would use the New Year to your advantage. "I'm sorry for your troubles, Bob. I feel for you. But, its the new year, and lets start it right! We're going to rule the world! Positive thinking takes practice."
We prop our front-loader open with a toy machine gun our son brought home from a friend's house. It gives our home a very rebel hideout kind of look that we ascribe to, since I teach French resistance-era poetry and all. And we discourage toy weapons, so they need to be repurposed, after all.
Sometimes we run our much more bourgeois dehumidifier in the room at the same time, but if you've ever calculated your carbon footprint, dehumidifiers are the main cause of global warming (that and cows farting).
If I were the manufacturer, I'd make a clip on the door so you could leave it open to dry, but I'm sure that would be a safety hazard and some small child would enter and shut the door and suffocate, leading to lawsuits and dead children. So I digress ... I think my kids (6 and 8) won't do that with the machine-gun situation I use, so I recommend it if small children and pets can be protected. First-world problems!
A GP is a good start but sometimes they aren't enough. Giving you an anxiety drug is just like covering a cut. If you can't sit and talk to someone long term, basically all you have is the meds and none of the counseling about your anxieties. Ask her for a referral to a counselor. Take a deep breath, it will be fine. You took the first step.
....so it wasn't a baby rhinoceros in the mail?

I can't speak for the American system but can give a UK perspective. This summer I was really struggling with anxiety. Something that I had never had before and it absolutely terrified me. I went to my GP who referred me to a service called Time to Talk who assessed me and determined that I was suffering from high level anxiety and moderate depression.
I was then sent on a 6 week course that has absolutely changed my life. I went once a week and learnt all sorts of things. It taught me to do my own CBT (how to better control my actions, thoughts and body in response to stress). Most importantly for me it normalised anxiety and depression, explaining how common it is and exactly what is going on inside my body when I get anxious and depressed. This somehow makes it so much easier to deal with. It was explained to me that what I was experiencing was in fact a NORMAL response to what had been happening in my life and taught me practical ways to deal with it. (We had sessions on sleep control and relaxation techniques too). After the course finished we were told we could access individual therapy if we felt we needed it and they also did discuss the merits of medication.
Although I still have days that are difficult, I am so glad that this option was offered to me or I could quite easily have started taking pills that, in my opinion, I don't need at the moment. I know my friend, who lives in a different borough to me, was put straight on anti-depressants when I think the course could have done the same for her.
Essentially what I'm saying is that I think we suffer more depression and anxiety, and therefore take more anti-depressants, because of the pace of modern life and the expectations placed upon us. But also because of a lack of knowledge of how to deal with the effects this extra stress has on our minds and bodies. Of course knowledge and stress control techniques would not be enough for everyone, but it has worked for me.
Of course, I am very lucky that we have the NHS in the UK so all these sessions were free (as will the individual therapy and any medication be, if I decide I need them later). It may not be an option when people have to fund it themselves.
Wow. This got long. Sorry.
