I'm 24, currently living in a supremely odd crisis-era situation with my parents and my new Brazilian husband. I'm temping, searching for full-time jobs, and trying to find affordable apartments since I moved back from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil recently, only to find that the NY job market is a hot mess. I lived in Brazil for two years, and in college I also lived in the Dominican Republic and Argentina.

My hubby recently emigrated to the US from Brazil. So far he's seen a lot of New York, a bit of NJ and Pennsylvania. Where should we take our first big trip? What US city/place should be at the top of our last?

I have plenty of trolls, but they always hide behind their computer. They're too chicken to actually want to really communicate. But I have a new, female troll who reminds me of some of your superhaters, the ones with hate blogs, who is DESPERATE to get my attention. I can tell she has problems and I probably shouldn't fault her for being crazy, but I don't know whether or not to engage her.

Hey Maurina, that's so kind of you. So to answer your questions:

I'm looking in Manhattan or Brooklyn, close to any subway line. (I have two different jobs in two different parts of Manhattan). I'd prefer Manhattan, even way uptown, or somewhere fun in Brooklyn (though the fun areas are almost as expensive as Manhattan, or equally expensive, ie Brooklyn Heights).

I guess our budget is $2000 max...ideally 1500-1800. Utilities included would be ideal.

The only real stipulation is that it's a private apartment (ie not shared), since now it's my husband and me. I'd prefer a 1BR, but I can live with a nice studio :)

I've had to look for apartments in a lot of places, but NY isn't one of them, since I grew up here, and I'm kind of terrified. I know the market's pretty good right now, but I kind of don't even know where to begin. A furnished sublet would be ideal, since my hubby and I have basically no furniture. But really, whatever good deal out there would be fine!

@Daddy Scratches I've had a similar problem with an e-zine that sometimes reposts my stuff. For some reason, this particular website attracts A LOT of crazies, and they leave all these insanely insulting comments about me there even though the site doesn't really monitor comments. A few times I had to email them and request for them to be taken down.

I didn't elope so much as decide the day before we got married and not tell anyone but my immediate family until after...ok, so maybe that is eloping. My husband had 90 days to get married on the visa he has, so we had almost no time to plan or figure out what to do, so we decided the day before to go to City Hall. (It took literally less than 60 seconds, it was kind of ridiculous) We're going to have a big wedding later on when we have some savings and time to plan.

@lolobentley I'm 24, too. The economy has sort of thrust me back a few steps and forced me to accept help from my parents again (i.e. them letting me live in my old bedroom), but a few years back when I was lugging groceries in the sweltering heat paid for with the last of my paycheck, I thought, "Hmm. So is this it?"

The right to health care -as far as I know - is not guaranteed in any way AT ALL in the US constitution.

ER departments are required by state law (I think - I may be wrong) to treat any and all regardless of their ability to pay, but those not covered by insurance, or only partly covered by insurance, are billed for the balance.

And if the balance is not paid 'in a timely manner' (determined entirely by the hospital), you can be sued and forced into bankruptcy.

Look, I am a US citizen born and raised. I love my country and I believe that freedom of speech, democracy and representation in congress is the best possible form of government in the world. But the health care situation makes me want to VOMIT.

I am critical of many aspects of our President's Health Care Reform bill. But what shocks the living hell out of me are the so-called protesters who continue to say utterly inane things like "Obama's going to force people over 65 to face DEATH PANELS!!!".

Are you fucking serious? Do people actually REALLY believe this crap, even now? Have any of these people read the damn bill? Good Lord. Does common sense have any place in this country anymore, or is everything determined by reactionary bullshit??

I have struggled for YEARS now when it comes to obtaining decent and affordable health care. I have never understood why I've been forced to battle so hard just to stay healthy. I've almost had to drop out of college to pay for an ER visit, I've had to use the ER to treat basic health issues, and I've gone without things like teeth cleanings or eye exams simply because I needed to use my meager income to feed myself first.

How can anyone say that it's ok for our citizens to suffer like that? What happens if something horrible happens to me tomorrow? Why should I have to lose my house just to pay for an accident?

Yes. It's a moral issue. Right now the only people who are covered adequately are the wealthy, which is our way of saying that only the wealthy/upper class are worth coverage. Therefore if you're poor you're not worth this countries time to care for.

And honestly, I think I'm worth being covered.
